I’m Back..

Posted in Uncategorized on January 6, 2010 by shockncult

So it has been awhile since I posted on here. The holidays kinda took me away from this but I am back and better then ever.

First off let me start by telling you about a couple of Asian flicks that I watched that are amazing movies.

1. Battle Royale

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266308/

This movie early on will have you asking the question “What would i do in this situation”  You can check out the IMDb link for more info on this movie but this movie rocks. It gets going early and never lets up. A very cool ending that I didn’t see coming. This is not a horror movie. If you don’t like violence then do not see this movie. Otherwise strap yourself in and get ready for a modern “Lord of the Flies”

2. A Snake of June

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330904/

Wow this movie knocked my socks off. Let me just say this movie runs at a funny pace. It starts off a little slow. You think the plot is going to be straight forward but it turns left into David Lynch-ville about halfway through. It it a film that will take a couple of viewings to suck everything in. And even then it leaves things open for you to make up your own mind on what is going on. I am no doubt going to check out more of director  Shinya Tsukamoto’s work, and I will review it on here. Awesome movie with great cinematography that shouldn’t be missed.

Check out both of these movies. More to come later on.

5 Asian Movies to get you going

Posted in Film Opinion with tags , , , , , on December 20, 2009 by shockncult

Alright here are 5 Asian films that I think are movies if you see any these should be the first. The movies are either gory, scary as hell, or just plain rocking.

Audition

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235198/

Director: Takshi Miike

This movie starts of slow but be patient, the wheels will fall off. Do not let anyone tell you anything about this movie before you see it.

Oldboy

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/

Director:Chan-Wook Park

This movie may have one of the greatest endings ever. Some parts of this movie will make you squirm. Run don’t walk to see this one.

The Host

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468492/

Director: Joon-ho Bong

This movie will make ya jump. But the reason this one is on here is because it is just plain fun. It reminds me of the old Godzilla movies…but ALOT better. It is hilarious at times also. This one is probably the easiest to find.

The Tale of Two Sisters

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365376/

Director: Ji-Woon Kim

This movie is probably one the scariest movie I have seen in awhile…and I’m not easily scared. It just sets up the tension early and never lets go.

Ichi the Killer

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296042/

Director: Takashi Miike

Another freacky movie from Miike. This movie isn’t scary as much as it is just a gore fest. Alot of action and some scenes are very gruesome. If you like blood you will love this movie.

Well, that is a small list to get ya stated. There are others like Ringu and Ju-On but these surpass those in my opinion. These movies are the ones that got me hooked on the Asian films. Takashi Miike may be actually be a crazy bastard and his movies show it, that’s why I love them . Also Chan-Wook Park may very well be the best overall director right now in Asian films. Anyof his movies are worth checking out.

So run out and pick these up. You won’t be sorry.

Inglorious Basterds

If you haven’t seen this movie yet, run to your local video store to rent it. Better yet run to your local store and buy it. This movie is awesome on some many levels.

I missed this movie when it was released in theaters (I truly do live in the middle of nowhere) but was finally able to catch it on Blu-Ray. What an amazing flick. Tarantino in the king of cool dialogue and this movie shows that.

Now first off let me say, if you are watching this movie for it’s historical preciseness then you are watching the wrong movie. Throw out your history books and just enjoy the movie.

Everyone in this movie is amazing but the one who stood out the most is Christoph Waltz. This dude comes out of nowhere, at least in the US, and puts on the best acting display this year. He is creepy and considerate at the same time. He is amazing.

Even Eli Roth is cool in this movie and that surprises me for some reason. I mean maybe it has to do with him just being the director of horror films but he is rocking in this movie too.

I am a huge QT fan but as he says this movie may be his masterpiece. The reason some will not say it is because we have loved his other movies so much it is hard to say he has made a movie that is better then say Pulp Fiction. But I think he has.

I cannot recommend a movie higher than this one right now. This movie is never dull. It will make you laugh out loud in a couple of scenes.

Amazing movie that I think will go down as a classic and I think everyone should check out.

The State of Movies Today

Posted in Film Opinion, Rant with tags , , , , , , on December 19, 2009 by shockncult

Let me first start off by saying that I love movies from every era. Earlier I posted my favorite movies but that doesn’t mean that I think those are the greatest films of all time. That is a whole list all together.

With that being said the reason I watch a lot of movies that I post on this blog is because I am bored. I am bored with state of Film. Hollywood has completely watered down the movies to the point of boredom. It is a lot of rehashed ideas or plots we have seen 300 times before that year.

Or we have have the other side of the coin which is movies get made that are so “artsy” that no one but the director can watch it with enjoyment. I mean c’mon, does anyone actually like The English Patient? I don’t think so.

Take the Vampire phenomenon that is going on right now. Do we really need this many Vampire movies and television shows? One thing hit it big and then every one is trying to cash in on the popularity of the Vampire cash cow.

With that being said there is one shining light..the series True Blood.  I have to admit that I am a fan but that is because it is written for adults not 15 year old girls by an author that writes like a 15 year old girl (yes I went there).

Twilight is all that is wrong in Hollywood. The books are crap. The movies are crap. Are you Team Jacob or Team Edward? I say who cares!!! I keep hoping for Hugh Jackman from Van Helsing or Wesley Snipes from Blade to show up and take out the whole bunch. Now that is a movie I would watch. Plus doesn’t anyone thinks it’s a little creepy that a 100 year old vampire has fallen in love with a 16 year old girl? Shouldn’t someone call child protective services? I mean isn’t that the very definition of a pedophile?

Sorry, I get my Twilight rant started and it is hard to stop.

Now listen there are alot of movies that I do like. For instance, I actually do like both Transformer movies. I love almost anything put out about a comic (other than Superman Returns and that crappy Punisher movie). The thing that a movie must have today is to not try and be more then it is.

Transformers is a movie that is put out for one thing…fun. You are supposed to go to the movies, turn off your brain and enjoy the ride. That’s it..nothing more..nothing less.

Things that I am sick of seeing are for one these romance movies. And is it me but is Amy Adams in like 85% of them. And Matthew McConaughey the other 15%. I mean they all seem like the same movie.

Enough with the stupid parody movies like Meet the Spartans and Dance Movie. If you actually go to the theater to see any of these movies you should really go and rethink your life because these movies are guaranteed to lower your IQ or make you impotent.

The reason shocking movies or cult movies are worth watching, even bad ones usually, are because it is at least an attempt at an original though. And if it wasn’t then at least they were not trying to be more then they were supposed to be.

The problem now is Hollywood has decided that because these movies are cool they are going to remake them. They are going back and remaking everything from old Grindhouse movies to Asian horror flicks (which they have been doing that for awhile now). The problem with that is it becomes watered down or reduced to a bunch of “boo” attempts instead of smart horror.

If you don’t believe me go check out The Tale of Two Sisters and then check out The Uninvited and tell me it isn’t watered down.

Hollywood is so afraid of messing up that it will not take a chance anymore. Even the indie scene is becoming that way and it is killing film.

So basically if you are bored with movies check out the movies I talk about on here. If you are interested in more then that hit me up a comment and I will send you a list of films to check out. I will try and post a list of different kinds of films soon to check out. There are all kinds of resources online for the different kind of genres I talk about here and I will post some cool sites later.

Take a chance, let go of what you think a movie should be. Don’t be afraid to try something old. Don’t be afraid to watch a movie with subtitles. Don’t let something like fake gore or sex keep you from watching a movie that might actually be good or at least interesting to watch. You might just be surprised.

The Mack

Alright so The Mack is a film that was released in the early seventies. It is supposed to be one of the better Blaxploitation films of the time. This movie has a huge cult following. It also has an early appearance from Richard Pryor.

If you want a more detailed summary click on the IMDB link above but the bottom line is we are following a pimp around as he tries to make it big.

I did not like this movie and do not understand it’s cult appeal. It was terribly edited, the acting seemed like everyone was drunk or high when they were filming the scenes and was unfunny.

When I say unfunny please understand that I do have a sense of humor. I actually like silly comedy and also love laughing at old movies that don’t mean to be funny but are. I mean come on I have basically started a blog celebrating them. But this movie was just not funny at all.

Also the movie was boring. You kept waiting for some plot point to happen that kind of shifted the gears to a place that would have moved the film along but it never happened. And I am a patient person that can sit through bad over bloated French movies. But at least in those there is a point where something…anything happens to trick you into staying with the movie. This one did not have that.

I always read from directors that say this movie was an influence (Tarentino for one) but for once I do not see why. This movie was one of the few movies from that era that I think was just bad…and not in a good way.

I cannot think of any reason for me to recommend this movie to anyone. I feel like this movie was a black hole that sucked away time that I will never have back. So if you do not have anything to do and want to watch a film that sucks the time and life away from for 2 hours then go ahead and watch. Otherwise stay away from this movie.

Baise Moi

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0249380/

Alright so for the first film to be blogged about here is a New Wave French movie Baise Moi. The film is directed by Virginie Despentes and Coralie. The movie is about two separate women who have there own screwed up lives. One is raped and beaten by her brother and the other is pretty much a nobody who just sits around doing nothing but hanging out and waiting to talk to her junkie best friend. They both flip out and kill someoneBais and their paths cross to develop a friendship that leads them down a hell bent path.

The film stars Karen Lancaume and Raffaëla Anderson.  Now there performances in this movie is fairly good for such a low budget movie. This movie looks like it shot on a video camera and is shot in a sort of documentary style.

Basically this movie consists of us following these two women after there initial flip out on a murderous, sexual hellish tear across France.

The first shocking thing about this movie is the sex in the movie. You will wonder what the hell just happened when it first comes on the screen. It will take you by surprise. This movie holds no punches in what it is trying to portray. It leaves nothing to the imagination. But it is supposed to in your face. The movie makes you pay attention even if you don’t want to.

Baise Moi is one of those movies that is meant to shock with it’s sex and violence. It trying to show what can happen if two people are pushed to their brink. Basically your “give a shit” meter breaks and you go across country drinking, having sex and raising hell.

This film is basically a Hardcore French version of Thelma and Louise . This movie will either intrigue you or make you turn you DVD player off 25 minutes into it. That is what a shocking cult movie is supposed to do. It is supposed to bring some kind of emotion out of you. Whether it be anger at such a film being made or grabbing you by the balls and making you watch even though you know you shouldn’t.

Baise Moi is one of those films that you may not watch more than one time but you will forever remember it. You will always talk about it when someone brings up crazy films they have seen in the past. That is what makes Baise Moi a movie on the blog. So if you want to be shocked check it out.

The Introduction

Posted in Film Opinion, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on December 18, 2009 by shockncult

So let me say welcome to the Shock and Cult Movie Blog. I will go more into what this blog is about but first let me give you a little introduction.

I am a HUGE film fan. If I wasn’t then what would be the point in writing a movie blog..right? Now with that being said though my movie taste is kind of all over the place. I am a huge fan of all different styles and kinds of film. Let me show you my top 10 favorite movies to give you a little idea.

(In no particular order)

Citizen Kane

The Kevin Smith Jersey Films (more then one but could be one huge film if watched back to back)

Star Wars Saga (yes I even like the prequel movies)

Fight Club

Reservoir Dogs

Moulin Rouge

The Abyss

Pulp Fiction

Caligula

Blazing Saddles

Now as you can see my taste is all over the place. But there are a couple of films in there that kind of give a clue on why this blog has been made.

Caligula

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080491/

This movie is one of the biggest train wrecks in movie history and I love it. If there is a movie that is a complete disaster it is this one.  But there has never been a film like it ever. Caligula one of the most shocking films you will ever see. It has everything. Gore..check. Bad acting…check. Presumably drunk British actors..check. Hardcore sex scenes..check. Incest..check. This movie will either make you clap or vomit.

Also if you look on the list there are movies by director either influenced by cult films or make films considered to be cult movies ( Quentin Tarentino and Kevin Smith).

So I decided to write a blog telling about and reviewing movies that are either cult classics, soon to be cult classics, shocking movies, and movies that no one would ever want to admit they have seen because it is to disturbing and sick.

Now some of the movies blogged about here may not be great movies but they will be different. If it boring I will say it. If it is great I will say it. If it is a movie that you shouldn’t watch when your in-laws are visiting I will say it.

The genres covered here will go from everything from 70’s grindhouse flicks to Asian film to New Wave French to exploitation flicks and back to current cult films.

The biggest thing is i want to give a voice to movies that some have never seen and movies that some may have never wanted to see.

The one thing I can say is watching these movies will always be ride. What kinda of ride is the question. So if you are willing to just take a ride no matter where it takes you because you are tired of the same old thing then stick around….because this thing is about to roll.
